Q. Why do candles require wax?

Answer

To get a candle going you have to provide the heat (often a bare flame from a match or lighter) to the wick which then causes a tiny quantity of fuel to melt and evaporate (the wax). In a combustible state the fuel interacts with atmospheric oxygen to produce a steady flame once it has been evaporated.
