There are three parts to a floating roof: a deck fittings and a rim seal system. Steel plates are welded together to form floating roof decks which come in three basic designs: pan pontoon and double deck.

Heavy-duty decking and a fixed roof are both included in domed external floating roof tanks. Fixed roofs frequently have exterior floating roof tanks with domed tops.

The fixed roof's main function is to prevent wind as well as act as a vapour barrier. A self-supporting fastened aluminium dome roof is another extremely common type of fixed roof. Similar to the internal floating roof tanks they have a fluid ventilation system.
