This type of fin tubes can also be supplied Root Soldered where base of the fins are soldered to the tubes for better bonding. The extended surface area of these finned tubes are used in many applications. The fin tubes can be made with tubes of CopperCopper-NickelAdmiralty / Aluminium Brass and fin material of Copper Aluminium & M.S. wound around it. Before winding the fin strip material is formed by rollers to "crimp" the fin. The strip is then helically wound under tension onto the surface of the tube. Due to the "wave" form on the edge of the formed strip the resulting effective increase in contact length ensures a good mechanical (and therfore thermal) contact between fin and tube. Both ends of the spiral fin are either welded or brazed to the tube to prevent any possibility of unwinding. For many years the Crimped Fin Tube has proven to be the most effective and economical element used for space heating due to the large surface area per linear foot obtained in the crimping process.
