The varieties included in the present study are selections made in the respective states by farmers and in research stations which were collected from these states as clonally multiplied plants using approach grafting/air-layering techniques. While sapota is grown solely for fruit in India in other parts of the world in particular southeast Mexico Guatemala and British Honduras it is grown mainly for its latex. The unripe fruits and bark yield white latex which solidifies on exposure to air and this forms the base material for making chicle (chewing gum)
