Summary of The Test Method :
Sufficient water is added to the cement that is being tested to produce a paste of normal consistency. Then a specimen is molded from this paste and is tested to ascertain the time taken for setting by means of the gillmore initial and final needles. The initial time of the setting is the time required for the test specimen to bear the initial needle without any major indentation, while the time taken for the specimen to bear the final gillmore needle without any major indentation is the final time of setting.
Conditioning Requirements For Performing The Test Through Gillmore Needle Apparatus :
Maintain the temperature of the room, dry materials, plates between 20-26 degrees Celsius.
Make sure the temperature of the water to be mixed is between 20-25 degrees Celsius.
The relative humidity of the room where the test is to be carried out should not be less than 50 percent.
