Pearl millet or Bajra is an important coarse grain crop and is the most widely grown type of millet. It is believed to be the native of Africa from where it spread to India and other countries. India is the largest producer of pearl millet. In India it is grown in Haryana Gujarat Maharashtra Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. In India Bajra is grown over an area of 11.34 million hectares with total production of 5.5 million tons.

Millet crop survives under adverse climatic conditions & is well adapted to growing areas characterized by drought low soil fertility and high temperature. It performs well in soils with high salinity or low pH. It is grown in low rainfall regions with annual rainfall ranging from 50-70 centimeters.
